Pictured on the left is the Scates building, constructed by local businessman John C. Scates in 1903 on Main Steet, at the head of Bridge Street. It was occupied by various tenants over the years. The city municipal offices were once located there, and for many years the municipal court occupied a portion of the second floor until the state created the District Court system in each county. The Masonic Lodge was the last owner of the building before it was taken by urban renewal. Temple Lodge No. 86 occupied the third floor for many years. The building was demoilished in 1981 despite strong citizen opposition. The present-day CVS Pharmacy and parking lot are on this site.
