Westbrook 3

Gray 0

Westbrook’s Kevin Grescoviak picked the right time to toss a gem. Grescoviak faced 18 Gray batters in a Little League playoff game in Scarborough Saturday afternoon and retired them all for a perfect game.

Grescoviak recorded nine strikeouts, eight ground outs and one fly ball out in six innings. His teammates provided all the offense needed with a two-run first inning.

Jeremiah Steele began the game with a single for Westbrook. Two batters later, Andrew McCarthy also singled. Keenan Lowe singled to score Steele from second to get Westbrook on the board. After Cameron McLain struck out, Cody Champagne doubled to score McCarthy and Westbrook had a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the inning, Grescoviak struck out Christian Verreault leading off then got Jack Martell and Sam Stauble to ground out to second and short for a quick 1-2-3 inning. In the second, Grescoviak induced two ground balls to short and another to second on just three pitches. In the bottom of the third, Grescoviak struck out two more batters around a deep fly ball to center by Tyler Small.

Westbrook tacked on a run in the top of the fourth. Kyle Heath doubled and was moved to third on a sac bunt from Aaron Duncanson. Caleb Bollig grounded out to second but Heath scored on the play and Westbrook had a 3-0 advantage. Gray pitcher Adam Healy escaped without further damage.

Grescoviak continued to dominate in the bottom of the inning. He struck out Collin Skilling leading off and got Martell on strikes as well. Another grounder to second and another inning was in the books. In the fifth, Grescoviak got two quick ground outs and his fifth strikeout.

In the sixth inning Grescoviak knew he was getting close to the feat that eludes most major league pitchers, the perfect game. After striking out Jacob Street to start the inning he couldn’t hide his smile. He struck out Aaron Chapman for the second out and again couldn’t keep from smiling. He got behind in the count against Ben Jordan before striking him out on a 3-2 pitch to complete the perfect game.

With the win, Westbrook was scheduled to face Portland North on Monday.
