The risks the asphalt plant and quarry proposed for Mosher Road pose to our community far outweigh any benefit it will provide to our town.
Gorham does not need an asphalt plant. There is no shortage of asphalt in southern Maine and construction projects are being completed just fine without this additional plant. Even Shaw Brothers, the company trying to build the asphalt plant and quarry, does not seem to need this new facility. They have continued to pave roads all summer with asphalt supplied from
other location, and even won the bid to construct the Gorham bypass without the asphalt from this new plant. If the price of getting asphalt from other companies were so high, Shaw Brothers would not have been able to offer the lowest bid to the state of Maine and secure this major contract.
The asphalt plant and quarry proposed for Mosher Road would only serve to increase the profits of this one company while putting at risk the health, safety and quality of life of many of the residents of Gorham.
Gorham does need new development to increase tax revenue, but this type of heavy industrial activity so close to residential neighborhoods and the center of town is not the way to do it. We need development that is safe and appropriate for its location.
The planning board should protect the future of our community and reject the proposal for an asphalt plant and quarry on Mosher Road.
