The Westbrook High football team is looking to improve on its 1-7 record from a year ago as they go on the road to square off against Portland in their season opener on Aug. 31.
The Blazes have 70 players on this year’s team (approximately 50 upperclassmen and 20 freshmen) under first year coach Daryle Weiss. The former Rockland coach has brought some enthusiasm and some new ideas with him.
“I think Coach Weiss has brought some excitement to the program,” said Westbrook athletic director Todd Sampson while noting that Weiss also has used new and innovative offensive strategies during the pre-season.
Westbrook actually led Marshwood by an 8-7 score last Friday during the Blazes’ exhibition game against the Hawks. (Marshwood was 8-0 in the regular season one year ago.) The Blazes are looking for more success this year with improved performances both offensively and defensively.
Westbrook’s home opener is Friday, Sept. 7, when they host Deering in a Western Maine Class A match-up.
