Gorham’s fire chief said the two-alarm blaze that destroyed a vacant house in South Gorham Saturday is under investigation.

Fire Chief Robert Lefebvre was uncertain of the origin of the fire. “It’s classified as suspicious,” Lefebvre said Tuesday.

Firefighters responded to an alarm at 8 p.m. Saturday at 218 Burnham Road. Lefebvre said the two-story, older home was fully involved when he arrived. “Flames were shooting everywhere,” Lefebvre said.

Lefebvre said firefighters fought the blaze with water trucked by tankers and water from a hydrant at a fire pond 3,000 feet away. He said the water supply was limited until firefighters stretched out hoses to the pond.

Firefighters were at the scene until 2:30 a.m. Sunday. Buxton and Scarborough fire departments assisted Gorham in battling the blaze and units from Westbrook and Standish covered Gorham fire stations.

No firefighters were injured and there were no other homes nearby.

Lefebvre said the house had been boarded up and hadn’t been lived in for several years. He was unsure who currently owns the property. The fire is under investigation by the state’s fire marshal, Gorham police and Gorham Fire Department.
