Enduring years of teasing from New England Patriots fans, a Westbrook teenager with allegiance to the Miami Dolphins scored with a Powerball ticket Saturday.

Pat Coyne, 18, won $40,000 playing jersey numbers of some favorite Dolphins players. Coyne picked four of five numbers, including the Powerball number, 13. He missed winning $23 million by one number.

“Completely shocking,” said Coyne, who graduated from Westbrook High School in June. “Forty thousand is incredible.”

Coyne’s mother drove him to Augusta Tuesday to collect. He picked up a check for $28,000. “It was pretty unreal when I saw my name on it,” Coyne said.

The federal government took $10,000 and the state $2,000 for taxes of his $40,000 winnings. He deposted $20,000 in a nine-month CD at a bank, gave his parents $5,000 and deposited $3,000 in a savings account.

He bought the ticket at Digby’s, a convenience store on New Gorham Roa, where he works. He hasn’t quit his job. “I’m still working here,” Coyne said.

The jersey numbers he picked were from retired and active Dolphins players. They were 12 (Bob Griese), 19 (Ted Ginn), 23 (Ronnie Brown), 54 (Zach Thomas), 39 (Larry Csonka) and 13 (Dan Marino). He scored on all numbers except 54. The ticket cost $1 and Coyne included Powerplay, an option costing another dollar. The option hiked the payoff from $10,000 to $40,000. Coyne has been playing Powerball with Dolphins jersey numbers for about three months. He figured he had invested about $40 overall.

Although he once saw the Dolphins play the Patriots in Foxboro, Coyne’s dream is to see the Dolphins play at home. He and his dad, Pat Coyne, are planning a trip to Florida, but haven’t selected a date yet. He described his dad as a “die-hard” Dolphins fan while his mom, Gina DellaValle, roots for the Patriots.

The teenager’s goal is to visit the Dolphins. “I would like to meet any of them,” Coyne said.

The owner of Digby’s, Matt Tompkins, called Coyne about 9 a.m. Sunday when Coyne’s mom stopped at the store. “I thought he wanted me to come to work,” Coyne said.

Tompkins, who recognized the numbers as those Coyne has played in the past, asked Coyne on the phone if he had played Powerball. “Get your ticket out, I think you won something,” Tompkins said.

He read the numbers to his boss. “I jumped out of bed when Matt said, ‘I think you won $40,000,'” Coyne said.

Coyne wears a Dolphin jersey and cap every day, even when he was in school. “At school, it was rough,” Coyne said. “I would wear my hat and jerseys even if they got pounded.”

Tompkins said Coyne had been ribbed every Monday in recent seasons when the Patriots have been dominant. “His loyalty to the team ended up making him $40,000,” Tompkins said.
