For those readers unable to watch or attend the Sept. 4 Gorham Town Council meeting, I want to report my impressions as one in attendance – the good ole boys doing business as usual.
A majority of councilors, though not publicly appearing to know all the ramifications of complex changes to the Land Use & Development Code, voted to approve changes that will assist the Shaw Brothers application for a new quarry and asphalt plant.
In the face of abundant citizen input and concern, and extensive research and recommendations from the planning board, they swept those ideas aside and relied on the advice of the consultant employed by Shaw Brothers, whose views were solicited numerous times after the public hearing was closed.
They could’ve and should’ve postponed action on these proposals until they could be studied and refined further, utilizing the expertise of objective, neutral consultants. Why the rush? Because they want to take good care of one corporate citizen, Shaw Brothers, and not slow down their next money-making scheme.
Please use the power of your vote in November. The citizens of this town can and should change the way the council does business. Unseat Councilors Justice, Loveitt and Dugas and put some new, independent voices to work for us. Remember, the real power lies with the people!
