Gorham’s David Gushee played well enough to win the Class A schoolboy golf title on Saturday at the Natanis Golf Club in Vassalboro. And Gardiner’s Ryan Gay also played well enough to win the Class A schoolboy golf title. So for the second straight year, the Class A schoolboy championship will be shared by two of the state’s top young players.

Both Gushee and Gay played well despite the soggy course conditions and both players finished with 74. Michael Bouchard of Messalonskee finished third at 79 and Tom Stirling of Gorham was among three golfers tied for fourth with scores of 80.

Gushee played in the No. 1 spot for the Rams all season long and he helped lead them to a 9-1 record in SMAA play. During one stretch this fall, Gushee shot back-to-back 32s in regular season matches. He and his teammates were disappointed at not qualifying for the Class A team championship tourney, but his winning round last week surely erased some of that frustration.

Joe Manganaro was the last Gorham player to win the schoolboy title back in 1999. One year ago, Ryan Gay tied Chris Hamel of Waterville for the Class A individual crown.
