Gorham Town Council chairman Norm Justice, who lost Tuesday’s election to Matthew Robinson by five votes, hand-delivered a request to the town clerk Friday to inspect the ballots and voting lists.
The inspection is the first step towards a possible recount. But Robinson is confident his victory would stand. “I’m thrilled and looking forward to serving the community,” said Robinson, thanking his supporters Friday. “I feel the voters have spoken.”
Christina Silberman, Gorham’s town clerk, has set
the inspection for 8 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13. She said all eight candidates in the council election would be notified about the inspection along with election wardens.
Robinson, 40, plans to attend the inspection and praised Justice, who has served on the town council 15 years, for his long service to the town. “I have nothing but respect for Norman,” said Robinson, who has previously served two terms but didn’t seek re-election last year.
This year’s eight council candidates also have a right to have representatives present at the inspection. Silberman said candidates would be allowed to view but not touch ballots. The total number of ballots cast is 3,352.
Justice, 54, would have five days after the inspection to ask for a recount.
Tuesday, Robinson narrowly defeated Justice 1,182 to 1,177 in the crowded field for three available three-year terms.
Phillip Csoros and Burleigh Loveitt easily won the other two seats. Incumbents Justice, Loveitt and Phil Dugas faced five challengers in the race. Dugas also lost his re-election bid.
The inspection requested by Justice impacts Tuesday’s council meeting at 7 p.m. to swear in the council winners. Citing an opinion issued by town attorney Bill Dale, Silberman said Friday that Loveitt and Csoros would be seated and Justice would be allowed to retain his seat Tuesday.
But Robinson said he’d be at Tuesday’s council meeting, even if he’s not allowed to be seated. “I’ll speak during the public comment to thank the voters,” Robinson said.
Tuesday’s agenda includes the election for council chairman and vice chairman along with appointments to various council committees. The council also is scheduled Tuesday to consider hiring two additional firefighters with emergency medical technician training.
