Morrison Developmental Center’s Building for the Future capital campaign has raised almost $1.7 million toward a new facility in Scarborough.

The center, which provides pre-school and school-age programs for children with developmental disabilities, as well as programs for adults, currently serves its clients on Veranda Street, Martin’s Point in Portland and on Route 1 in Scarborough.

The campaign goal is $2.5 million. The $5 million building project will also be financed by the sale of the Veranda Street property and savings the center has set aside over the last decade. The center has purchsed seven acres of the former Pleasant Hill Golf Course in Scarborough. The new building, which would consolidate programs, will incorporate 25,000 square feet of handicapped-accessible, single-floor classroom and therapy space and two greenhouses, allowing programs to expand by 25 percent.

“With waiting lists for almost all of our programs, we look forward to being able to open the doors for more children and adults with developmental disabilities to enroll in our programs by 2009,” said Jim DeCamillis, executive director.

Honorary co-chairmen of the campaign are Jim Moody of Cape Elizabeth and Fred Pape Jr. of Falmouth. Tim Thompson of Cape Elizabeth serves as president of Morrison Developmental Center.

The center’s annual sale of Christmas trees, wreaths and poinsettias starts Friday, and runs weekdays from 12-6 p.m. and weekends from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. until Dec. 15. The sale is located a the center’s Portland site, just beyond Martin’s Point Health Care headed toward Falmouth.
