Avery Barr a pageant contestant

Avery Barr, 16, of Gorham will compete for the title of Miss Maine Teen USA 2008 on Saturday and Sunday at the Sheraton Tara Hotel in South Portland.

Avery is the daughter of Don and Kelly Barr. She attends Gorham High School, where she participates in field hockey and indoor track.

Her sponsors for the pageant are Mr. Bagel, Gorham Grind, Barrow’s Greenhouse, and her family and friends. The young woman chosen as Miss Maine Teen USA 2008 will go on to represent the state of Maine in the 2008 Miss Teen USA Pageant.

Buy a brick for Baxter

Next September will mark the centennial of the Baxter Memorial Library and the Baxter Museum. To commemorate this anniversary, the Baxter Memorial Library board of trustees voted to establish a Centennial Endowment Fund. Interest from the fund will be used to enhance the library’s collections.

The trustees also voted to repave the walkway to the Baxter Museum as a way of celebrating James Phinney Baxter’s gift to the town. “Buy A Brick for Baxter” is a program designed to honor the library’s benefactor and support the Centennial Endowment Fund.

The commemorative bricks can accommodate three lines with up to 22 characters on each line. The bricks may be purchased in memory of persons or pets or to honor loved ones, friends or to celebrate weddings, birthdays, graduation and other special events.

The cost of the first brick is $75; each additional brick is $60. The cost includes the brick, engraving and installation of the walkway. After the walkway is completed, all proceeds will go to the Centennial Endowment Fund. The purchase of a brick will help both the museum and the library.

Santa to visit White Rock

Santa will be on hand for the annual White Rock Community Club Christmas tree lighting at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday at the community building on Wilson Road.

The tree lighting will also feature music and singing. Those attending are asked to take a favorite Christmas goodie to share. Refreshments will include coffee, hot chocolate, sandwiches and desserts.

Snow White auditions

Auditions at Centre of Movement for the musical ballet “Snow White” will be held 4:30-6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29, and 6:30-8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 30, at 19 State St.

Gorham Business & Civic Exchange will meet for a light breakfast at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29, at Moody’s Collision Center, 200 Narragansett St., Gorham. Members and guests are invited and there is no charge.

Gallery open house

Elizabeth & Main Gallery and Frame Shop, 238 Main St., Gorham, will be holding an opening reception for Gorham artists Sean Hathaway and Lucy Ellen Smith from 5-7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1, directly following the annual holiday open house from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m.

Hathaway’s abstract paintings are bold and playful, earning him an award at the University of Southern Maine’s Retinal Delights show. Smith, a portrait artist who works primarily in pastels, will be unveiling her most recent piece.

Casco Bay concert

The Casco Bay Band will present “The Many Moods of Christmas” at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1, in the McCormack Performing Arts Center at Gorham High School. Tickets are $7; $6, seniors; children free.
