Police are searching for the Westbrook man charged with beating his girlfriend’s 6-month-old son earlier this year.
Steven Waterman, 20, was released from Cumberland County Jail on $2,000 bail in July. He was under the supervision of Maine Pretrial Services until he fled an appointment after failing a drug test, violating a condition of his release.
“We believe he’s in the area,” Westbrook Police Chief Bill Baker said Monday, but police have not yet been able to locate him. The warrant was issued Nov. 5.
Waterman was charged on May 17 with two counts of aggravated assault and one count of assault on a minor after allegedly abusing a 6-month-old child in his care, Camren Baker.
Police say Waterman had been babysitting for the baby’s mother, Jamie Swan, on May 16. Swan was dating Waterman at the time. According to police, when Swan returned home from attending college classes, she found bruises on her son.
Swan took the baby to the hospital, where it was determined he had more than 25 bone fractures, bruising on the brain and hemorrhaging behind his eyes. He was soon released from the hospital, but several weeks later, during a routine checkup, doctors discovered brain swelling. Camren underwent surgery where a shunt was inserted to drain the fluid from his skull.
Waterman had been held at the Cumberland County Jail for about two months from the date of the incident waiting to post bail and enter into the contract with Maine Pretrial Services.
Waterman’s address of record for the courts is the Westbrook apartment where Swan had been living, but Swan has since moved out.
Among a number of bail conditions, including no contact with minors, Waterman was not to use any illegal drugs. On Oct. 25, during one of his routine, weekly office visits to Maine Pretrial Services, he tested positive for marijuana, Oxycontin and Buprenorphine, according to Shawn LaGrega, Waterman’s supervisor at Maine Pretrial Services.
Maine Pretrial Services is a publicly funded, nonprofit organization designed to supervise those accused who either cannot afford bail or whose crimes are severe enough that a judge orders extra supervision while released on bail.
LaGrega said Monday Waterman was polite and had complied with the conditions of his bail before the recent incident. The Oct. 25 urinalysis was not the first Waterman had submitted to. He had not previously tested positive for drugs.
“He wasn’t aware he would be tested that day,” LaGrega said. After Waterman tested positive, LaGrega was prepared to discuss with him what the possibilities were for continuing to work together.
“We asked him to have a seat, I left the room, and when I returned he was gone,” LaGrega said.
