The three local high school football teams made out very well when it came time for coaches to choose all-star players in the Southwestern Maine Activities Association. The undefeated Class A state champions from Bonny Eagle had numerous players make the All-SMAA team and the All-Cumberland County team as did the Gorham squad that finished 7-2. And two quality players from a 3-5 Westbrook team were selected to the All-SMAA team as well.

Bonny Eagle players dominated the All-SMAA offensive squad: Nate Doehler at quarterback, Ricky Hoyt at wide receiver, Josh Spearin at offensive tackle, Matt Spearin at offensive tackle, and Kyle Wedge at center.

The Scots also had several players on the All-SMAA defensive team: Travis Dunn at defensive end, Dayton McPherson at linebacker, Josh Ruby at defensive back, and John Onesti at utility.

The All-Cumberland County team also was filled with Bonny Eagle names. The first team offense included Nate Doehler (at both quarterback and kicker), Josh Spearin, Matt Spearin, Kyle Wedge, and Ricky Hoyt. The second team offense also included the Scots’ Travis Dunn at tight end.

Bonny Eagle’s representatives on the All-Cumberland County defensive first team included Travis Dunn, Dayton McPherson, Josh Ruby and John Onesti. The Scots also had linebacker Brandon Keene on the second team defense.

The Gorham players on the All-SMAA offensive unit are Justin Villacci at running back and Travis Plowman at offensive guard. The Rams’ All-SMAA defensive representative is Shawn Connolly at defensive tackle.

Gorham’s players on the All-Cumberland County first team offense are Justin Villacci and Travis Plowman. And the Rams’ Shawn Connolly was selected to the second team at offensive tackle.

The first team All-Cumberland County defense included Gorham’s Shawn Connolly and the second team included Kevin Boucher at defensive tackle, Francesco DiDonato at linebacker, Evan Nash at defensive back, and Ryan McMullen at defensive back.

The Westbrook Blue Blazes had two players selected to the All-SMAA defensive all-star team. Senior Ian Levinsky was chosen for his fine play at defensive end and senior Joel Chadbourne was picked for his consistently solid play at linebacker.

The All-Cumberland County team had one other Westbrook player in addition to Levinsky and Chadbourne who both made the first team defense. Will Wescott was selected to the second team offense at offensive tackle.

And all three programs had players earn All-Academic status (93 average or higher).

Bonny Eagle – Jacob Boudreau, Dana Jackson, Brandon Keene, Otis Oakes, John Onesti and Matt Spearin.

Gorham – Isaac Barnes and Evan Nash.

Westbrook – Ian Levinsky.

The Mike Landry Coach of the Year Award went to Kevin Cooper at Bonny Eagle for helping to bring the school its third state title in the last four years. And the Dave Allen (MVP) Award went to Gorham’s Justin Villacci.
