Reece’s Variety Store, at left, was located at 843 Main St. for many years. Owned by Leaverett A. Reece, it was known as “The Friendly Store.” As shown in the photo of the interior, the store offered many services, including a luncheonette counter, newspapers, cards for all occasions, cigars, photo developing, school supplies, candy, Cushman bakery products and a host of other items. The store closed in 1962. The space was eventually taken over by Parker’s Dress Shop, which moved from across the street. Urban renewal demolished the building, known as the Springer Block, in the 1970s. The site now is a municipal parking lot.
