Pat Coyne has had quite a year. Unfortunately, he can’t say the same about his favorite football team.
The 18-year-old from Westbrook returned home this month after traveling to Miami with his parents to see the Dolphins play compliments of the team. That was after he used the jersey numbers of Miami Dolphins players to win $40,000 in the Powerball.
“The whole trip was awesome, except for the game. They got killed,” said Coyne.
This fall, Coyne connected on four of five winning numbers, missing $23 million by just one number. After taxes he’ll receive $28,000.
Along with his parents, Pat Coyne and Gina DellaValle, he received VIP treatment at the Dec. 2 game, after his mother sent an American Journal article on her son’s good fortune to the team.
The younger Coyne said Dolphin Stadium was sold out for the game. But the Dolphins, who are winless this season, lost to the New York Jets 40-13. During the game, Coyne and his parents sat in seats at the 40-yard line, 13 rows from the field with a view of the Dolphins’ bench.
“I was sitting around season ticket holders. They were very nice seats,” Coyne said.
The Dolphins had invited Coyne along with his mom and dad to any home game of their choice. They received a pass in the mail for preferred parking right next to the stadium.
Upon arrival and a cell phone call to a team customer service representative, the family was escorted through a tunnel to the field. “I was clicking away,” the teenager said about snapping photos but added they weren’t allowed to seek autographs or talk with players.
Coyne and his parents watched the Dolphins and Jets for an hour as the players warmed up for the game. He was impressed by how serious the players were before game time.
His dad is also a big Dolphins fan, but the New England Patriots are his mom’s favorite.
The Westbrook family flew to Florida on Nov. 30 and stayed with relatives. They returned to Maine in the snowstorm Dec. 3.
No. 54, which is worn by player Zach Thomas, was the one that didn’t pan out in Powerball for Coyne. But earlier this fall, Thomas sent Coyne an autographed photo.
“Pat, keep sticking with the Dolphins. Maybe 54 will show up for you,” Coyne said Thomas wrote.
Cutline (Dolphins) – A dream comes true for Pat Coyne and his parents, Pat Coyne and Gina DellaValle, who were recent guests of the Miami Dolphins.
