Thornton Academy 11

Westbrook 0

Peter Remmes had a hat trick and Thornton Academy got goals from seven different players in an 11-0 victory over Westbrook at USM on Saturday. Travis Dion and Michael Remmes each had a pair of goals for the Trojans.

Thornton scored just one of their goals in the first period. Midway through the period, Westbrook’s Justin Dube was sent to the penalty box and the Trojans had their first power play of the game. They took full advantage of it when Dion took a pass from Chris Stasio and stuffed it in the net for a 1-0 lead. But that was all they would get in the first.

“Westbrook played a heck of a first period,” said Thornton coach Greg Cloutier. “They played a great defensive game in the first to stay just 1-0. Our goal then was to pick up speed in the second and make some plays and some passes. And we did in the second and third.”

The Trojans came out firing with both barrels in the second period. Michael Remmes scored his first goal of the game on a one-timer just four minutes into the period.

Midway through the second, Thornton scored four goals in a span of just 1:23. The first of those came at the 9:50 mark of the period when Alex Howard gathered in a big rebound and put it back. Thirty-six seconds later, Sam Dussault flicked a wrist shot from the right circle. That made it a 4-0 game.

Seventeen seconds after the Dussault goal, Zack Ouelette got in on the act and fired a backhander into the net. The flurry of goals ended 30 seconds later when Peter Remmes scored a short-handed goal on a breakaway. Thornton led 2-0 before the rash of goals and 6-0 afterwards.

“I think my guys thought they should have had more goals in the first,” Cloutier said. “They knew they weren’t passing well and we talked about that. I think we went out in the second and made the passes.”

The Trojans would add one more goal in the second period when Peter Remmes struck again with just 16.5 seconds on the clock to give his team a 7-0 lead heading into the third period.

“Losing Zach (Souza) early in the first really hurt us and losing Tommy (Lemay) hurt us,” said Westbrook coach Travis Jalbert. “You try to play two lines against a team that goes that deep and we got tired pretty early. We had a few mental breakdowns but I’m proud of the effort. The guys just kept going the whole game. That shows a lot. They kept their cool, stayed classy and worked until the end.”

Thornton picked up right where they left off in the third period. Less than three minutes into the period, Michael Remmes scored his second goal with a one-timer from Samuel Canales. About two minutes later, Dion had his second goal when he snuck the puck underneath Westbrook goalie Zach Joy. Canales scored midway through the third to make it a 10-0 game and Peter Remmes finished off the hat trick with just three minutes to play.

“(Westbrook had) a nice first line but I think they just aren’t as deep,” Cloutier said. “I have three lines that can fly and it’s a big ice surface. That helped us tonight. It didn’t help them; they can’t keep track of all of us.”

Westbrook was scheduled to play Deering on Wednesday. The Trojans were scheduled for a big early season test against Kennebunk that same night.

“I’d like to tell my guys to stop shooting but I’m going against Kennebunk next week and we want them to keep skating,” Cloutier said. “We were playing Kennebunk in the third period tonight, that’s why we went full speed. We need to be ready for Kennebunk.”
