The natural beauty of Maine provides many popular and diversified drop backs for weddings, along with more traditional ceremonies in churches.

But some innovative couples are opting for unique settings to provide lasting memories. As an example, a Connecticut couple took their vows outside Westbrook City Hall last summer because the groom’s last name is Westbrook.

Then Westbrook City Clerk Barbara Hawkes officiated at the ceremony in front of the sign on the city hall lawn. The groom had a collection of city memorabilia and the bride had also fallen in love with Maine. So choosing Westbrook as a place to say their vows was a natural. The couple was even officially welcomed by Mayor Bruce Chuluda.

The couple stayed in Ogunquit, a favorite place for the bride. Famous for its seafood, Maine provided an opportunity for the couple to dine on lobsters and to bask in the sun on its sandy beaches.

Beaches are also a popular spot to hold a wedding ceremony. The great outdoors also affords activities such as hiking to a mountain top.

In southern Maine, Crescent Beach State Park and Two Lights State Park, both in Cape Elizabeth, provide excellent opportunities to hold an outdoor wedding in beautiful surroundings.

Crescent Beach has a mile-long beach and Two Lights State Park affords a rocky coastal setting with a view of Casco Bay.

Fort Williams, a municipal park in Cape Elizabeth, is also a popular spot to get married. It features one of the most recognized lighthouses in the world – Portland Head Light. Weddings groups can make reservations for the picnic shelter, bandstand and gazebo at Fort Williams by contacting Cape Elizabeth Community Services at 799-2868.

For those who enjoy a lake setting, there’s Sebago Lake State Park in Casco. It also features sandy beaches. Two other special, scenic spots in southern Maine also offer a great place to tie the knot – the park at Limington Rapids on the Saco River in Limington or Riverbank Park along the Presumpscot River in Westbrook.

Maine has year-round opportunities for weddings including skiing on mountain slopes or whitewater rafting in the wilds. State parks are also a great place to hold a ceremony, just be sure to follow all the park’s rules.

In addition to the outdoor options for weddings, many couples prefer a more traditional church setting and southern Maine offers a number of choices. Available to members of its congregation for weddings, LifeChurch in Gorham has an attractive gazebo on its flower-bedecked lawn.
