The South Portland boys’ indoor track team turned in a solid effort to score 90 points Saturday in a meet against Noble and Gorham. Gorham was second with 77 points and the Knights were third with 21. The Red Riots won six events on the way to their meet win. Gorham claimed nine events, but couldn’t score enough points to overtake South Portland for the overall win.
The Riots picked up some major points in the senior shot put, where Jake Viola took first place and five points. His teammates Aaron Bickford and Ian Golder took second and third to give the Riots 10 points in that event alone. Gorham earned a point with Tim Johnson taking fourth. The fact that the Riots took second and third and earned several points was a theme that continued all throughout the meet.
The Riots again swept the top three spots in the two-mile run. David Knowland was first with a time of 10:46.8 with teammates Sean Esten and Michael Welch coming in second and third. Gorham’s Foster Blake picked up a point for the Rams by finishing fourth.
South Portland’s other event wins came in the 45-yard hurdles where David Hardison led another South Portland sweep of the top three positions. The Riots also claimed victory in the junior 600, the senior 600 and the 800-meters. John Medici took the junior 600 in yet another top three sweep for the Riots. Brian Huynh captured the senior 600 in a tie with Gorham’s Rob Marean. Jonathan Clement took the 800-meters, topping Gorham’s Jon Foster by two seconds.
The Riots picked up several points for runner-up finishes and other top four finishes. Cal Skillings took a point in the junior shot put. Hardison was the runner up in the high jump. Will Carter and JC Esquibel were second and third in the junior hurdles. Adrian Reid took second in the junior 40-yard dash. Golder grabbed another point in the senior 40. Reid was second in the junior 300 and Hardison and Tony Haeuser were second and third in the senior 300.
Adrian Arsenault and Misha Carmichael were second and third in the 200-meter dash. Golder and Sean Feely took third and fourth in the 400-meter dash. All of the individual wins and finishes of second through fourth gave the Red Riots their 90 points and the overall win.
Gorham won more events than South Portland, but didn’t have as large a number of scorers. They did take all of the top three spots in the junior shot put. Adam Hawkes won that event with a throw of 34-feet, 11-inches. Tremayne Jones and John Phinney were second and third respectively.
Other Gorham event winners included Justin Villacci, who took the senior 40 and the 200-meters. John Foster took the junior hurdles with a 6.7 second run. Kamron Alexander won the junior 300. Mike Greatorex won the senior 300. Gorham took the top two spots in the 400-meters, with Cam Stevens beating out Allen for the top spot.
Gorham also won the senior and open relays to finish the day with 77 points. But the difference in the meet was the number of second, third and fourth place finishes that South Portland was able to rack up.
South Portland will be in action again next Saturday at the Expo when they take on Biddeford, Cheverus and Windham. Gorham will battle Marshwood and Portland later on the same day.
