Two city employees in Westbrook received awards for their hard work and dedication at a City Council meeting Monday. Barbara Hawkes, who recently retired after 14 years as city clerk, was recognized by the state for her service to the city. “I couldn’t believe it,” Hawkes said after receiving the award. “I was just thrilled. I didn’t expect anything.” Linda Gain, secretary for the offices of planning, engineering and code enforcement, was named the city’s 2007 Employee of the Year. Gain has worked for the city for 13 years. She held positions in the finance department and for fire and rescue before being hired for her current position. “It’s an honor,” she said of being named employee of the year.
