On Thursday night, the Sanford girls basketball team took advantage of a 23-13 run against visiting Bonny Eagle to pull ahead in the third quarter to pick up their second win of the year, 58-44.

Mary Roberts led the Redskins with 19 points, and she also finished the game with 10 rebounds. Jill Boyce chipped in with 10 points and Taylor Flood had eight. Messina Provencher led the Scots with 12 points.

The Scots and the Redskins kept the game close in the first half, with Sanford holding a slight 12-10 edge after the first quarter. The Redskins pulled out to a five-point lead at halftime following a 15-12 second quarter.

After the break, Roberts took over in the third quarter to help Sanford pull away and secure the win. She scored eight of her 19 points in the quarter to help pace the Sanford run. The Redskins held Bonny Eagle to 13 points in the third. With just eight minutes to play, Sanford now held a 50-35 lead.

While Bonny Eagle outscored Sanford in the game’s final quarter, it wasn’t enough to overcome the third quarter run. The Scots managed just nine points in the fourth quarter while holding the Redskins to just eight points.

When the buzzer sounded, the Redskins had their second win of the year.

Bonny Eagle dropped to 1-15 with the loss. The Scots then lost on Saturday to Gorham to fall to 1-16 on the year. They were scheduled to wrap up their season on Tuesday against Windham.

The Redskins improved to 2-14 with their win over the Scots. Sanford hosted Noble on Saturday and fell 48-26. Sanford’s record fell to 2-15 with that loss. Sanford was scheduled to host Gorham on Wednesday.
