Fresh off a thrilling 35-32 overtime over Windham on Friday, the Westbrook girls basketball team is gearing up for a run at the Class A title. The fifth-seeded Blazes will get their championship quest underway with a quarterfinal game against No. 4 Scarborough on Feb. 18.
The Blazes finished the season with a 13-5 record, a huge jump from the 1-17 of just three years ago, and now the Blazes are hoping that their late-season momentum carries them far into the tournament.
As they have all season, the Blazes will have to rely on the leadership of seniors Cynthia Wescott and Audrey Shutts, as well as junior point guard Erin Murphy if they want to be the last team standing in Class A.
The Blazes certainly know that they can play with any team in the tournament, having knocked off No. 1-seeded Deering earlier in the season. The Blazes also beat Scarborough as well this season and battled No. 2 South Portland to overtime before losing to the Red Riots.
The Blazes’ quarterfinal game against Scarborough will be at the Portland Expo on Feb. 18, tipoff time is 7 p.m.
