Gagnon on dean’s list

Renee Gagnon has been named to the dean’s list for the fall term at Springfield College in Springfield, Mass.

Gagnon is a fourth-year student majoring in rehabilitation and disability studies.

Connolly in historical special

Professor Michael C. Connolly will speak when the Westbrook Historical Society meets at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21, at its headquarters, 17 Dunn St.

Connolly’s topic will be the lives of early Irish workers in Maine. A history professor at St. Joseph’s College, Connolly has written several books about the colorful history of early Irish-Americans and he edited the book “They Changed Their Sky: The Irish in Maine.”

The public is invited to the special event and admission is free.

The society meets regularly at 1:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month except in July and August. For more information, call the society at 854-5588.

Nugent to speak at library

Westbrook Police Officer Michael Nugent, a Civil War author, will speak at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 27, at Walker Memorial Library, 800 Main St.

Nugent is co-author of “One Continuous Fight: The Retreat from Gettysburg and Pursuit of Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia July 4-14, 1863,” and his topic will be the book. The program is part of the “Author Speaks” series at the library.

He is a retired U. S. Army armored cavalry officer and the proud descendant of a Civil War cavalry veteran. A long time student of the

Gettysburg campaign, Nugent has previously written for several military publications.

He is also a guide at the Pejepscot Historical Society’s “Joshua L. Chamberlain Museum” in Brunswick.

Bailey presides at Lincoln Club meeting

Phyllis Bailey, president of the Lincoln Club of Portland, welcomed about 80 people at its meeting Feb. 7, honoring the 200th birthday of Abraham Lincoln.
