I am writing to remind Gorham and surrounding areas that the asphalt-plant issue is still alive and that March is the month when the last of the public hearings with the Planning Board will occur.

The dates for the first and second of these public comment meetings are yet to be scheduled and publicized. Please check local papers, or log onto www.ccogme.org for more information.

Now more than ever, the Planning Board needs to see a show of people who remain concerned about the outcome of a quarry and asphalt plant that can operate 24 hours a day, year ’round. The board needs to hear now from those who are aware that if the project is approved as it is, there is no formal plan for monitoring noise limits, and inadequate planning for environmental impact monitoring, especially for mining below the water table.

If you have concerns about an estimated 800 diesel truck trips daily (72 trucks an hour during morning and evening rush hours), or the impact of this on the sounds, smells and roads of our community, please let your voice be heard.

If you are troubled by the fact there has been no independent hydro-geological study to prove operation will not adversely contaminate groundwater or the Presumpscot River, despite recommendations for this independent opinion, please be counted in the audience of the public hearings for this project application.

This is our last chance to be seen and heard. Please don’t count on others to do it for you, as it may not be enough. Your voice can still make a difference.
