The Westbrook City Council took a final vote Monday to allow farm animals to be kept in residential zones.
The council voted unanimously to pass the land use ordinance amendment which allows all farm animals in residential zones, as long as they aren’t being kept for commercial purposes.
The conclusion comes after more than a year of meetings, workshops and public hearings by the Zoning Board, the Planning Board and the City Council.
Originally, the matter was brought to the City Council when complaints were made regarding chickens and bees that were being kept at two different Chestnut Street homes.
Specific guidelines have been written into city ordinances regarding the keeping of bees, fowl and poultry. If, in the future, complaints arise about other farm animals kept in residential zones, the council will write rules to keeping them, as well.
