In 1909, Dr. Felix Barrett established Barrett Hospital in the stately old house at 537 Main St., left photo. The hospital served Westbrook and the surrounding communities for many years. At one time there was a second-floor enclosed walkway that connected the hospital to the building next door at 529 Main St. The second floor of that building was used as a recovery area for surgical patients and a nursery. Barrett Hospital closed when the newly constructed Westbrook Community Hospital opened in 1962 on Park Road. The old Barrett Hospital and the building at 529 Main St. were both sold, and the walkway between the buildings was removed. The hospital building was remodeled into apartments and remains as such. The 529 Main St. space was also converted into apartments on the second floor, with commercial space on the first floor. Medeo European Food & Deli is the current first-floor tenant.
