Gorham police said an elderly man was pronounced dead at Maine Medical Center Wednesday following a two-car crash at 2:40 p.m. on County Road (Route 22).
Police Chief Ron Shepard said the man appeared to have suffered some sort of medical event that caused the accident. The man collided with a car driven by a woman, who was treated at the hospital and released. Both were alone in their vehicles.
Shepard did not release the names of the drivers.
The accident occurred between King’s Farm Stand and the County Road intersection with South Street.
Shepard said a driver leading a line of westbound traffic observed the man slumping over in his vehicle while driving toward him. The driver swerved to avoid a collision with the man, who struck the rear driver’s side of the second vehicle in line. Shepard said the man’s vehicle continued on and went into a driveway, where it stopped.
The collision closed a portion of County Road until about 5:45 p.m., when it reopened to traffic, according to Cumberland County Dispatch.
