McLellan & Lane Co., a hardware, grocery and dry goods store, left, occupied the first floor, and George Dunn, harness maker, occupied the second floor of this old wooden building that once stood on Main Street at the corner of Fitch Street. The building was known as the Pride Block, and in later years the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. – A & P – occupied the first floor. In 1939 the building was demolished to make way for a modern A & P store. When it went out of business in the early 1970s, the LaVerdiere’s Super Drug Store chain opened in that space. Rite Aid Corp. purchased the LaVerdiere’s chain and the name was changed to the Rite Aid Pharmacy. Rite Aid built a new store on Main Street in the Cumberland Mills area and the old store became a Family Discount Store.
