Alpaca farm open house

Long Plains Alpacas farm, 301 Long Plains Road in Buxton, will be holding an open house and education day on Sunday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Visitors can learn about what alpaca ownership is all about. There will be several alpaca farms on hand presenting their breeding programs, as well as shearing demonstrations. A veterinarian will be on hand to answer questions, and a certified alpaca judge will evaluate individual animals.

There will be knitting, spinning, hand-felting and yarn-dying demonstrations, as well as Maine-made finished products.

Middle school library featured

Bonny Eagle Middle School Library is the featured school library for May by the Maine Association of School Libraries. The association’s Web site features photos of the library.

“I got the idea that having a banner representing each of the 18 clans in our school, to hang in our library might be a fun thing to do,” said librarian Anne Farley, who is of Scottish descent. “All of our sixth, seventh and eighth grades are divided into clans, such as Cunningham, Edinburgh and MacNab, to name a few. I acquired the fabric from Scotland, cut out and pasted the letters sewed them up.” The library has flags for each clan.

Bonny Eagle science fair

At the Maine State Middle School Science Fair on Saturday, May 10, Bonny Eagle Middle School was well represented with strong projects. Second place was awarded to Seamus Myer and Riley Murphy for their “M and M Glovefitter.” Third place went to Brittany Greenlaw for her “Alarming Zap.” The following students were finalists: Ian Smith, Haley Thorne, Nicole Smith and Shayne Winslow. The Bonny Eagle Middle School’s Honor Flag was raised to salute their scientific accomplishments.

Downeast Fiddle Jamboree

Downeast Fiddle Jamboree will be held Friday and Saturday, May 30 and 31, at 7:30 p.m. at Saco River Grange Hall Theater and Concert Hall, 29 Salmon Falls Road, Bar Mills.

This year’s round-up of Maine’s champion fiddlers is presented by the venerable country dance band, The Old Gray Goose, (Jeff Mckeen, Doug Protsik, and Carter Newell, on fiddles, accordion, piano, guitar, banjo, harmonica, fiddlesticks and bones.) Also playing music from French Canada, the Maine Maritimes, Maine’s Swedish, Finnish and Scot-Irish communities are the legendary master fiddler Timmy Farrell; the traditional Down-East Don Roy Trio (Don on fiddle, Cindy on piano, Jeff Young on bass; Jeff and Cindy do French Canadian Step Dancing); and the young fiddle wizard Milo Stanley. This inspiring extravaganza has become an annual Grange showcase of Maine Talent. Tickets are $14, $12. For reservations, call 929-6472.

Discount passes available.

Buxton Recreation Department is again offering $25 discount passes to Funtown/Splashtown USA, which is 28 percent off the gate price. The $25 pass provides two rides on the Grand Prix Racers and unlimited use of all other rides, slides and pools at Funtown/Splashtown USA. We also are now offering discount passes to Cinemagic Movie Theatre. These passes are $7, which is 22 percent off of the box office price.
