The beautiful old house, at 473 East Bridge St., was built around 1748 by James Winslow from timber he cut on the large tract of land where the house is located. Early Quaker meetings and the first school of which there is any record were held in the kitchen, which featured deep windows and a great fireplace. James Winslow’s son Nathan and grandson Nathan II later inherited the property. Both were prominent men of their time. In 1830, Sarah Jane Winslow, James Winslow’s great-granddaughter, married Benjamin Boody and the property remained in the Boody family until 1909, when the death of the last member of that family made it possible for Alvin Dean of Portland to acquire the estate. Dean restored the nine fireplaces in the house and built a dam across a brook near the house to create a pond that exists to this day. Dr. and Mrs. Ira Stockwell are the current owners and have done much to preserve the beauty and history of this old house.
