A mother of two teenagers is seeking re-election to another three-year term to the Buxton Board of Selectmen in the municipal election on Tuesday, June 10.
Jean Harmon, 44, who is chairwoman of the five-member board, was first elected as a selectman in 2002. “I’m running for a third term as I would like to see several projects completed, including the new town garage and the new Buxton elementary school,” she said.
Harmon and Bob Libby are the two incumbents facing challenger Keith Emery in a three-way race for two available seats for three-year terms.
Harmon favors hiring a town manager, which would require a charter change. She said someone should be available each day to handle issues that arise. Harmon said there are times when none of the selectmen are in Town Hall.
Active in the schools, Harmon volunteers at the Frank Jewett School and is a member of the building committee for School Administrative District 6 that is planning the new elementary school for Buxton. The new school in the center of town would consolidate existing Buxton elementary schools.
Before serving her town on the Board of Selectmen, Harmon was on the budget committee for four years from 1998 to 2002, once as chairwoman.
She has a busy schedule but invests time in youth programs. Harmon is a member of the board of directors of Buxton Little League. She is also a soccer coach for the Buxton Recreation Department. She is now the acting director for the department since the recent resignation of the director, Chris Barstow, last month.
Harmon and husband, David, and their two children Jeremy, 16, and Marley, 13, live on Back Nippen Road. After graduating from Westbrook High School, Harmon attended the University of Southern Maine.
She enjoys her role as a selectman. “It is a rewarding experience to be able to make a difference in the town you live in,” Harmon said.
