Seeking more Friends

The Friends of Walker Memorial Library are hoping to increase their membership and are inviting any one who appreciates the library to the next meeting.

The Friends of Walker Memorial Library will hold a meeting Wednesday from 5:30-7 p.m. in the Gathering Room. The Friends of Walker Memorial Library supports the library and its mission by raising funds to assist with purchases and to provide scholarship assistant to a Westbrook student.

Each member is encouraged to attend and bring a friend. The goals and work of the organization will be discussed. Light refreshments will be served.

Cool Water at Riverbank

The group Cool Water will be in concert 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday at Riverbank Park.

Members of the trio sing old-time country and western songs with three-part harmonies and minimal instrumentation. They were winners of the Maine Country Music Association’s awards in 2003 for vocal group and traditional country band.

The free concert is part of a summer series sponsored by the Westbrook Recreation Department.

Symbol on all-conference teams

Brittany Symbol, a 2006 Westbrook High School Graduate, was recently named to the 2008 All-PAC (Pennsylvania Athletic Conference) Academic teams for both the women’s basketball and lacrosse teams.

The two honors were announced earlier this month by Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Commissioner Amy Frankenstein. This past spring Symbol started all 16 games for the Falcon’s lacrosse team and scored 19 points. She is majoring in biochemistry with a minor in forensic science and maintained a 3.9 grade point average.

Enman on dean’s list

Vanessa Enman has been named to the dean’s list at St. Joseph’s College for both spring and fall semesters.

Enman, majoring in elementary an special education, is a 2006 graduate of Westbrook High School. She is the daughter of Danny and Patty Enman.

Hanscom earns master’s

Courtney Hanscom graduated in May from the University of New England with a master’s degree in occupational therapy.

Hanscom, who was on the dean’s list for five years, works at Maine Medical Center as an occupational therapist. She is the daughter of Michael and Linda Hanscom.

Class plans 40th

The Westbrook High School class of 1968 will meet at an informal gathering at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 6, at Riverbank Park, where the local band Flashback will play.

Ladies Guild enjoy lunch

The Ladies Guild at Prides Corner Congregational Church recently met for lunch at Applebee’s.

Members of the group rewarded themselves after a year of hard work on special projects for the annual harvest fair. Thirteen members of the guild were joined by church pastor the Rev. Susan Gilpin, Judene Dyer and Noah Grady.

Autumn dance classes

The Drouin Dance Center of Westbrook is now taking registrations for fall classes, which begin the week of Tuesday, Sept. 2.

Classes in ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, creative movement, lyrical, musical theater dance and Irish step dance for ages 3 through adult, levels beginner through advanced, are offered. Students will explore technique, history, choreography and improvisation in each dance discipline.

Those were the days

Westbrook resident Jim Cote said in a recent note that five gallons of gasoline in 1930 sold for 85 cents, which is 17 cents per gallon.

Cote’s research also revealed that a haircut 78 years ago was 25 cents and eggs sold for 22 cents a dozen.
