The photo on the left shows the old house built in 1810 by Maj. William Valentine, father of the Honorable Leander Valentine, the first mayor of Westbrook. The house is located at 583 Main St., and is currently occupied by a real estate office. For many years a popular belief persisted that Leander Valentine was born in this house, which is not the case. Leander Valentine himself stated that he was born in a house on Main Street that was located diagonally across from Church Street. The parking lot between Bank of America and TD Banknorth occupies that site.
