Fugitive on loose
On Tuesday, July 7, at 6:27 p.m., police stopped a vehicle for a loud muffler near Olympia Sports on Payne Road. According to police, the driver, Jorge-David Alvarez-Solano, 31, of Mexico, did not have a valid license. He was arrested and charged with operating without a license. Two passengers, Fredy Suaso, 22, of Honduras, and Mario Jaime Alonzo, 36, were determined to be fugitives from justice and wanted by the Immigration and Naturalization Service. Suaso was arrested and held for INS, police said, but Alonzo fled the scene before he could be arrested, police said. Police conducted a search with a K-9 unit but were unable to locate him. When located, Alonzo will be charged with refusing to submit to arrest and being a fugitive from justice.
Dirt bike gone
On Thursday, July 10, at 4:32 p.m., police responded to the Chia Sen restaurant on Payne Road for a report of a stolen dirt bike belonging to a Chia Sen employee. The blue and white 2004 YZ85 dirt bike was stolen from the back of a truck between noon and 12:30. The bike is valued at $3,000. The case remains under investigation.
Telltale odor
On Friday, July 11, at 3:06 p.m., police observed a vehicle on Route 1 make a left-hand turn, cutting off several cars, into the parking lot of a Sunoco gas station. Authorities say the officer approached the car to speak to the occupants and allnoticed a strong smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle. The occupants consented to a search. The driver, Maurice Allen, 24, of 85 Granite St., Portland, and his passenger, John Edwinson, 24, 567 Route 1, were both charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Telltale burn
On Saturday, July 12, at 4:34 p.m., police responded to a report of an unpermitted burn on Castle Terrace. According to police, several persons under the age of 21 were found drinking near a small fire pit. Christopher McDonald, 20, 25 Wermuth St., South Portland, was charged with furnishing a place for minors to possess or consume liquor. Jamie L. Thorne, 20, 60 Sawyer Road, was charged with possessing liquor. Justin Foss, 4 Miller Ave., Biddeford, was charged with furnishing liquor to a minor. All were issued summonses.
INS case
On Sunday, July 13, at 7:42 p.m., police stopped a vehicle for having a headlight out on Route 1. Upon investigation, police determined that the driver, Natalio Juarez Galvez of North Wilkesboro, N.C., did not have a valid license and his two passengers were illegal aliens. Galvez, 35, was arrested for driving without a valid license. Passengers Diodoro Aniceto-Dircio, 33, and Jose Angel Nava Ponchoteco, 32, both of Mexico, were detained for the Immigration and Naturalization Service.
