Your editorial in the July 24 American Journal was very interesting and addressed some of Buxton’s problems. Unfortunately, a town manager alone will not be able to solve the problems.
There are many checks and balances in any form of government. The town has a finance committee, a town treasurer as well as a yearly audit. Does it seem rational that it took three years to figure out that there was a continuing shortfall and apparent mismanagement of the recreation fund?
Until we have a Board of Selectmen that works as a unit for the benefit of the town, there will be no hired department head who will be safe.
The last two fire chiefs and police chief were professional people. Wjy would they leave? Most town residents know the reason, especially if they have ever had any contact with the selectmen.
We need qualified people to run for these offices. The current Board of Selectmen answers to no one – especially its voters.
