I live in the Birdland neighborhood and I don’t think an active gravel pit, rock crushing operation and asphalt plant should be allowed to come to this part of the city.
While a number of the businesses in the area have gone on record in opposition to Pike’s plan of expanding to this part of Westbrook, I want to go on record and express my dismay that our residential neighborhood would be so close to this kind of heavy industry.
This neighborhood has been somewhat helpless as the city commercial development has built up around us. The intersection of County Road and Spring Street was just widened to accommodate all the traffic. The last thing we need is more trucks, and nobody who lives here wants to smell fumes from an asphalt plant or deal with noise and vibration from blasting.
This type of thing should take place far away from neighborhoods. Until Blue Rock sold their land to Pike on Spring Street, that quarry was all but dormant. Now is not the time to begin to blast and ruin another part of Westbrook.
