Just three short weeks ago the Deering football team came to Standish and handed Bonny Eagle their only loss on the field this season. The Rams took advantage of several Bonny Eagle mistakes to escape with a 29-28 win. This Saturday the two teams will meet again in the Western Maine semifinals.

Last week the Rams defeated Gorham in a game that was over almost as soon as it began. Deering scored 21 unanswered points in the first quarter on their way to a 28-0 halftime lead. Gorham managed six points in the third quarter but could do nothing to stop Deering running back Jack Heary, who had five touchdowns in a 48-6 win.

The Scots dominated Cheverus for the second time this season in a 35-0 quarterfinal round win to earn their spot in the semifinals. Ever since the loss a few weeks ago, all the Scots have wanted is another chance to play Deering.

“That’s all we wanted after that loss; it was a very hard loss to take,” said Bonny Eagle quarterback Nate Doehler. “We are ready. It will be doubly intense and we’ll be more focused and mentally ready for them and physically ready for them Saturday.”

The Scots will need to limit their mistakes as the Rams are a team that can make you pay for them. They will also need to limit the impact of Heary in order to be successful. Head coach Kevin Cooper likely will have a plan in place. He has also been looking forward to a rematch.

“It’s what we wanted,” he said. “It’s going to be a tough task to beat them over there, but its something we’ve been looking forward to ever since they came here and beat us. We’re not complaining about our path right now. I think a lot of fans would like to see this be the Western championship. But we’re ready to get after Deering right now.”

Just because the Scots have wanted a rematch with Deering, don’t think they were looking past Cheverus a week ago.

“That’s how we play when it comes to the postseason, Doehler said. “We don’t look at the next game. We look at the first one first because we need to get by that one first.”
