Season outlook: The Scots lost several top players to graduation last season. Doehler, fresh off leading the Scots to a state title in football, will be called on to provide senior leadership for a Scots team that should be tournament-bound this season.
Sport: Girls basketball
Coach: Suzanne Rondeau
Last year’s record: 1-17
Key players: Messina Provencher, Alyssa Severance, Kari Christensen, Lashawna Jackson, Sarah Assante and Jessica MacDonald.
Key games this season: Rondeau said that all of the games on the schedule are key ones for a Bonny Eagle team that is looking to rebound from last year’s 1-17 season.
Season outlook: While a state championship may be out of reach for the Scots, Rondeau said that with an experienced team, Bonny Eagle aims to make the Class A playoffs this season. “We are returning all starters from a year ago, with some very young talent in the mix,” Rondeau said. “The quicker the new players can adapt to the varsity level, the more success we will have this year. We are working hard and looking to make the playoffs.”
Sport: Boys indoor track
Coach: Greg Wilkinson
Last year’s record: The Scots finished sixth at the state championship meet last season
Key athletes: Jamie Ruginski, Nick Winslow, Joey Collins, Tim Belanger and Caleb Gosselin
Key meets this season: The Scots will face tough opponents such as Scarborough, Gorham, Cheverus, Deering and Thornton Academy as they look to top last season’s record.
Season outlook: Wilkinson is hoping that the Scots improve on last year, where they finished sixth overall at the Class A state championships. With several top runners returning , the Scots should have a shot at improvement. “Our goal is to have fun, show improvement weekly and by the end of the season, be competitive in the state meet,” Wilkinson said.
Sport: Girls indoor track
Coach: John Turrell
Last year’s record: regular season (9-1), third place at the SMAA championships, eighth at the state championships
Key runners: Stephanie Stockwell, Lindsay Dyer, Lauren Wallace, Melissa Carrier, Lauren Dudley, Morgan Costa, Peyton Dostie, Amber Dostie
Key meets this season: Turrell said that every meet is a key one for the Scots this season.
Season outlook: The Scots enter the winter track season in good shape, with an experienced team looking to make some noise in Class A. Turrell said he is optimistic about the Scots’ chances this winter. “We have nearly everyone back from last year’s team, so it should be a very exciting season,” he said.
Sport: Boys and girls swimming
Coach: Laura Branch
Last year’s record: Girls: won two meets; Boys: won one meet
Key swimmers: Girls: Seniors: Aisling McGrath, Danielle Wyman; sophomores: Catherine Patchell, Allison Cliff, Nicole Avery; freshmen: Emily Durgin, Riley Heroux
Boys: Senior Greg Yum; Greg Judge, junior; Neil Yarumian, junior; Kyle St. Jean, sophomore; Jason St. Clair
Key meets this season: The first meet of the season against Windham on Dec. 5 at St. Joe’s College and all four home meets at St. Joe’s against teams such as Deering and Portland.
Season outlook: The Scots have a small team on both the boys and girls teams, which makes it tough to win dual meets against larger teams, but Branch said that there are other ways to win. “I want to get as many kids as possible to make cut times for the state championships and help them to improve on their personal bests,” Branch said.
Wrestling
Coach: Brooks Clark
How did last year end: Seventh at Class A state championship meet; Steve Martin 152-pound state champion
Wrestlers to watch: Steve Martin, Dalton Groeger,
Outlook: With Clark at the helm, the Scots were one of the elite teams in the 90’s and early 00’s. Clark took the helm again last season and the Scots will once again look to be one of the top teams in the state.
Ice Hockey
Coaches: Roger Morse, Mark Whitman
Last year’s record: 16-2-0, No. 4 seed in Class A West tournament, lost to No. 12 Scarborough in quarterfinals
Players to watch: Travis Dunn, forward; Taylor Bishop, forward
Key games this season: Dec. 6 @ Biddeford; Dec. 15 vs. Scarborough; Dec. 20 vs. Kennebunk
Outlook: The Scots have lost in the quarterfinals the past two seasons, with last year’s loss being especially tough to take as it came at the hands of No. 12 Scarborough. Look for the Scots to rebound on the ice this season and once again be among the top teams in Class A come tournament time.
