One American Legion Post is doing its part to help troops abroad have a happier holiday.

Last week, members of Post 197 on Conant Street sent boxes filled with magazines, snacks and games to a mental health clinic for soldiers in Baghdad – and they’re looking for more to send.

The Legion members got involved when Linda Newbegin, lead volunteer for the Maine National Guard, heard from Alice Stone of Standish, whose daughter Debbie works at the clinic.

“I hope they have good dentists over there,” Nancy Dacar, adjutant at the Legion post, said last week as she organized the boxes filled with candy.

Post 197 is still looking for donations of gifts, goodies or money to help pay for postage. To make a donation, call 854-5788.

Linda Newbegin, lead volunteer for Maine National Guard, and American Legion Post 197 members Fred Cummings, Greg MacDowell, Nancy Dacar and Dave Martin get ready to bring packages to the post office to send to soldiers at a mental health clinic in Baghdad.
