Bonny Eagle quarterback Nate Doehler is one of three finalists for the Fitzpatrick Trophy, awarded annually to the top senior high school football player in Maine.

Doehler led the Scots to their second straight Class A state title during the fall, capping off a 9-2 season with a 26-6 win over East champ Skowhegan for the gold ball.

While also a top defensive back, punter and placekicker, it was as quarterback in the spread offense that Doehler left his biggest impression. He threw for 19 touchdowns and over 1,400 yards and ran for 17 TDs and nearly 1,300 yards during his senior season.

The field of Fitzy candidates was narrowed from 11 to three last week. The winner will be announced at a banquet in Portland on Jan. 18. The other finalists are Justin Staires of Mountain Valley and Billy Clark of Skowhegan.

Staires led the Falcons to a Class B state title and an undefeated season. A do-it-all offensive threat, he returned kicks, ran the ball, and played QB and receiver at times, logging over 2,600 total yards and 36 TDs during the past season.

Clark, running out of Skowhegan’s double-wing set, ran for nearly 2,200 yards and 28 TDs during the past fall.
