The Westbrook wrestling team appears to be finding its stride at just the right time.

“After a 4-4 start, we have won 10 of our last 13 heading into the last week of the regular season,” reported coach Ryan Hutchins. “This past Saturday, we swept a quad meet at Portland High School against Scarborough (50-14), Portland (65-11) and Sanford (58-12).

“We closed out our home season this past Wednesday, splitting a tri meet with Marshwood and Noble, beating Marshwood (66-15) and losing to Noble (61-12).”

The Blue Blazes have six wrestlers with at least 20 wins. Andrew Drouin, wrestling most recently at 189 pounds, leads the team with 29 wins. Hutchins said he should be the top seed heading into the Western Maine regional championship, where he’ll compete at 215.

Harrison Strondak (145) has 27 wins. Steve Sawyer (171) has 25, as does Glenn Emery (112). Cole Larrivee (140) has 22 victories and Craig DiBiase (125) has 21.

Senior captain Zach Huggard (130), who missed two weeks with an injury, has 17 wins, as do Cody Payer (103) and Graham Strondak (135).

The Blazes were scheduled to visit two-time defending state champion Massabesic on Wednesday for a dual meet after the American Journal’s deadline. On Saturday, they are scheduled to compete in the Southern Maine Classic at Marshwood High School.
