Westbrook police charged 13 people with drinking and drug violations Saturday night, during a special effort to enforce underage drinking laws.

The violations included furnishing liquor to minors, illegal possession of liquor by minors, illegal transportation of liquor and drugs and possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia. According to Lt. Mike Nugent, the officers caught the violators through traffic stops and surveillance of liquor stores. Some of the 13 were arrested and others were summonsed.

Nugent said the Westbrook Police Department uses grant money to pay officers overtime in order to conduct underage drinking enforcement, drunk driving patrols and sobriety checkpoints throughout the city, and will continue these details throughout the year.
