Bonny Eagle High School football standouts Josh Spearin (left) and Nate Doehler made their college choices official Wednesday morning, signing a national letter of intent to play at the University of Maine. A signing ceremony took place in the high school lobby in Standish as media, faculty and students gathered. Spearin, a 6’4″, 300-pound two-way lineman for the Scots, is expected to compete for the Black Bears’ starting right tackle spot in the fall. He’ll join brother Matt Spearin in Orono. A 2008 graduate of Bonny Eagle, Matt Spearin redshirted his freshman year and is a frontrunner for the starting center position next season.
Doehler, who received the Fitzpatrick Trophy last month as the state’s top senior football player, led the Scots to back-to-back Class A state titles as quarterback in his junior and senior seasons. He also played defensive back, place kicker, punter and kick returner. He could play right away at UMaine as a punter and will be in the mix to earn snaps at quarterback.
