SMCC teams fall in conference tournament
The Southern Maine Community College men’s and women’s basketball teams saw their quests to repeat as Yankee Small College Conference champions come to an end last week. The men, ranked third, were upset 87-84 by the University of Maine-Augusta in the quarterfinals. Coleman Findlay had 26 points and nine rebounds. Matt Findlay added 16 points, while Josh Tuplin had 11. The women, ranked first, edged UMA 79-75 in the semifinals, but were denied 59-49 by Central Maine CC in the championship game Sunday.
Two PBC fighters win Golden Gloves titles
Portland Boxing Club middleweight Russell Lamour and welterweight Jimmy Smith won New England Golden Gloves championships last week. Lamour outscored Tom Fallowa of Providence, R.I., 5-0. Smith climbed off the canvas in the first round and beat Michael Andrade, of Lowell, Mass., 3-2. Smith was named the Outstanding Boxer of the tournament.
MCU Comedy night fundraiser upcoming
Maine Coast United and TOPSpurs TOPSoccer Programs, a community-based training and team placement program for young athletes with disabilities, are hosting a Comedy Night fundraiser on March 6 at The Gold Room (next to Portland Sports Complex). Doors open at 7:45 p.m. and the show begins 8:30 p.m. There will also be a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle.

Six-month running program beginning
Waynflete School cross country coach Ziggy Gillespie is offering a six-month running program for any level of ability. Information and registration will be held Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Peak Performance Multisport on Marginal Way in Portland. The program starts March 4 and meets every Wednesday night at 6 for a group run and workout.

Deering student-faculty game upcoming
Deering High School’s annual student versus faculty basketball game will be held Friday, March 13 at 7 p.m., at the DHS gym. There will be nominal fee.
