Gorham firefighters rescued 12 people from an elevator that stuck at 6:30 p.m. on March 1 in Bailey Hall at the University of Southern Maine.
Gorham Fire Chief Robert Lefebvre said Tuesday the elevator was stuck between the first and second floors. The 12 students were trapped for about 30 minutes.
“We killed the power and got the doors open,” Lefebvre said.
Robert Caswell, university spokesman, said Tuesday that 12 occupants exceeded the elevator capacity. Caswell said several students’ groups had meetings that evening in Bailey Hall.
He said firefighters cleared the scene at 7:30 p.m. and there were no injuries.
