The Westbrook High baseball team hosted Gorham on Patriots’ Day for a doubleheader scrimmage. Conditions were good for baseball Monday, with the sun out, the field dry and only a slight wind to remind players that it’s still April.
Both teams are scheduled to kick off the regular season on Saturday. Westbrook is slated to host Cheverus at 1 p.m. while Scarborough travels to Gorham for an 11 a.m. contest.
Bonny Eagle also opens up Saturday at Noble at 11 a.m.
All three local teams made the Class A West tournament a year ago. The Westbrook Blue Blazes, in Mike Rutherford’s first season as coach, finished the regular season as the No. 3 seed and advanced to the regional championship before falling to Deering, the eventual state champion. With a solid batch of seniors and a talented group of sophomores back, the Blazes have their sights set high entering their 2009 campaign.
The Bonny Eagle Scots made a remarkable turnaround last season in Marc Sawyer’s first year at the helm, going 10-6 to earn the No. 5 seed in the playoffs just one year removed from a 1-15 season. The Scots have some experienced players back and Sawyer has added longtime Gorham coach Rocky Myers to his staff as an assistant.
Chuck Nadeau, a former University of Maine pitcher and coach at Windham High, takes over for Myers at Gorham. The Rams squeaked into the playoffs last season as the No. 10 seed, then knocked of No. 7 Marshwood in a prelim game and shocked No. 2 Thornton Academy in the quarterfinals before being eliminated by Westbrook. While the Rams lost a number of top players to graduation, they figure to be in the mix for a playoff spot once again.
But it’s not just baseball getting under way this coming week. Local teams in all spring sports will be starting their seasons. Here’s a look at all of the upcoming sports action.
