1000 kittens every May: how to help

Scarborough, Maine — Every May, without fail, the Animal Welfare Society

(AWS) can count on an influx of more than a thousand homeless kittens, and

Biddeford Savings plans to help the shelter deal with the annual kitten

tsunami.

The bank has accepted a challenge from AWS by arranging for its Scarborough

branch to participate in an ongoing effort to make the annual AWS “Kitten

Shower” a big success. The bank is asking the general public to help it

collect much-needed donations of supplies to help care for the wave of

kittens and mother cats. Specifically, the bank is collecting donations of

clumping cat litter, paper towels, wet and dry kitten food, toys, and kitten

milk replacement (KMR). Biddeford Savings’ Scarborough branch is located at

360 U.S. Route 1. The project’s coordinator is customer service

representative Nicole Jeffers, who can be reached at 883-3004.

“It’s really hard to imagine how big this problem is,” Jeffers said. “We’re

very pleased to be able to help, and we’re very thankful to all the animal

lovers out there for whatever donation they are able to make.”

Jeffers said the branch will collect supplies until May 9th, the official

“Kitten Shower,” and on that day Biddeford Savings will deliver everything

to AWS at their West Kennebunk location. From noon until 2PM that day, the

shelter will conduct a weigh-in of all the supplies to determine which

organization wins the “Project Kitten Challenge.”

The mission of the Animal Welfare Society (www.animalwelfaresociety.org) is

to provide humane shelter and care to animals temporarily in need of

housing, and to further the cause of responsible animal adoption and

ownership through education and public awareness.
