People who lived near and worked with the Westbrook couple found dead from stab wounds at their home Tuesday afternoon say they saw no signs of trouble between what they thought were a happy husband and wife.

But police say there had been two previous calls for domestic violence incidents between Ken and Belinda Taylor in the past 10 years. Westbrook Police Chief Bill Baker said the deaths are being investigated as either a murder-suicide or double murder, which will be determined by autopsy results expected Thursday afternoon.

Baker said police are still scouring the crime scene, too, where weapons and blood splatters will help investigators determine what led to the deaths Tuesday.

The couple’s 14- and 12-year-old daughters discovered the bodies in the living room of their Juniper Lane condominium when they returned home from school that afternoon.

“Every piece of evidence tells a piece of the puzzle,” Baker said.

Kenneth, 45, and Belinda Taylor, 43, had been married for 14 years, but were in the process of getting divorced, according to police. However, no divorce paperwork had yet been filed, according to a clerk at the Cumberland County District Court.

Neighbors said they had lived in the condominium complex for about 10 years and were friendly, helpful people.

However, one neighbor, Linda Ledoux, said Ken Taylor’s truck had been parked in the driveway for most of the day Tuesday, which was unusual.

Dean Erickson, who worked with Ken Taylor at Overhead Door Co. on Riverside Street in Portland, said Taylor had left work early. Erickson stopped by the house Tuesday afternoon to check and see if everything was OK, but found, instead, the Taylors’ daughters in hysterics, having just found their parents’ dead bodies.

Baker said there is little information about the previous domestic incidents, which occurred in 1999 and 2000. No charges were filed.

“Kenny was a hardworking guy. He came to work every day. He loved his kids,” Erickson said. “They were good people…I don’t know what happened.”

Nancy Hamilton, who works at The Racket and Fitness Center on County Road, where Belinda Taylor had taught aerobics classes for the past five years, said she had just seen her the night before.

“I said, ‘There’s no way,” Hamilton said about her reaction to hearing the news. Belinda Taylor had taught a regular Monday night Zumba dance aerobics class at the fitness center and came and left as she always did, “happy as a clam.”

“It’s bizarre,” she said.

Tracy MacNider, a tennis instructor at The Racket and Fitness Center who took some of Belinda Taylor’s classes, said she was a personable woman and a great instructor with a lot of energy.

“She loved talking. Every time you tried to leave, she’d start up a new conversation,” MacNider said.

Hamilton and MacNider said Belinda Taylor rarely talked about her personal life, but that her 14-year-old daughter would occasionally come with her to the gym when she taught classes, and work out or hang out and eat the free popcorn by the bar.

Standing outside the condominium complex as police started their work on the crime scene Tuesday afternoon, friends of the couple talked about what good parents and good people the Taylors were.

“He loved his kids more than himself,” said David Stigile, a neighbor.

Amanda Smith, who knew Belinda Taylor as a friend and neighbor since they were 9 years old, described the couple as “the best people ever.”

“They would do anything for anyone,” Smith said. “They were both too good to be true.”
