A Westbrook man was charged with assaulting a 15-month-old child last week.

The child’s mother reported the assault April 29, and, after an investigation by Westbrook police and the Department of Health and Human Services, Gavin Smith, 24, of Hawkes Street, was arrested and charge with assault.

Police Chief Bill Baker said he couldn’t release more details on the nature of the assault, yet.

“We’re still evaluating the case and the charges,” he said.

According to Baker, there is a relationship between the mother and Smith, but he is not the father of the child.

Smith was bailed from Cumberland County Jail on Thursday.
