Bonny Eagle outfielder Tyler Ruby remembers well last season’s playoff game when his older brother Josh got the start over him. It just made sense with Biddeford using a lefty pitcher, said Bonny Eagle coach Marc Sawyer, as Josh hits from the right side of the plate while Tyler hits from the left side.

On Saturday, facing a southpaw for the first time this season in Thornton Academy’s Steve Trask, both Rubys were in the lineup with Tyler leading off. He got the Scots off to a nice start, tripling to right field to start the game. Standing on third base, he asked his coach a question – one that his bat had already answered.

“After he got the triple,” Sawyer said, “he turned to me and said, ‘So I can’t hit lefties, coach?’ I was like, ‘Where the heck did that come from?’ He said, ‘Remember last year?'”

Tyler Ruby’s three-bagger sparked a big first inning for the Scots, who held off a late Thornton rally for a 6-5 win in Saco. Bonny Eagle improved to 6-0 while the Golden Trojans dropped to 1-4.

The first five hitters of the game reached base for the Scots. Tim Grovo knocked Tyler Ruby in with a single. Lincoln Sanborn followed with an infield hit and Joe Davis was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Grovo and Sanborn scored when the throw home following Travis Dunn’s grounder to third sailed wide. After Davis was thrown out at the plate on a fielder’s choice, Kevin Moskevich knocked in Dunn on a groundout to put Bonny Eagle up 4-0 early.

“Everyone was real pumped up,” said Grovo, who finished with three hits and relieved Moskevich on the mound in the sixth, getting the final four outs for the save. “It was an important game for Thornton. They beat us last year, so they gave us a little more incentive to go right at them.”

The Trojans, who graduated 12 seniors from last year’s team, have had a tough early schedule and have struggled to put a full game together.

“One inning has been our Achilles’ heel in the four games that we’ve lost,” said Thornton coach Greg Paradis.

The Scots added a run in the third as Davis tripled to lead off and scored on Dunn’s sacrifice fly to make it 5-0. The Trojans rallied in the bottom half of the inning to get within 5-3 as Sam Butts knocked in Chris Stasio with a single and Brad Turgeon’s single plated Butts. In between, Trask scored on a double steal after reaching base on an intentional walk.

“Thornton Academy is a well-coached team. They play real hard. Any time you come here you know you’re in for seven innings of a battle,” Sawyer said.

Richie Harvey doubled in the fifth to score Davis to put the Scots up 6-3.

Thornton made it a one-run game in the sixth as Alex Jacques reached on a walk and later scored on a wild pitch. Pinch hitter Derek Cameron singled and scored on Stasio’s groundout, chasing Moskevich, who struck out two and made several fine defensive plays during his 5.2 innings on the mound.

Grovo, a starter last year who was turned into a closer this season, came on to face Sam Canales with two outs. Canales’ fly to short left field dropped in for a double. He advanced to third on a wild pitch, putting the tying run 90 feet away with Trask, one of the league’s top hitters, at the plate. Grovo got Trask to fly out to right field to escape the jam.

“I tried to keep it away from him a little bit,” Grovo said. “That’s all I can really do, just not give him too much to hit.”

A one-out walk and stolen base in the bottom of the seventh again gave the Trojans the tying run in scoring position, but a fly out and a come-backer to the mound that Grovo handled himself ended the game.

Tyler Ruby and Davis each had two hits for the Scots. Butts and Turgeon each had a pair for Thornton.

Bonny Eagle lost for the first time on Monday, falling to Cheverus 7-2 at home. Mick DiStasio pitched a three-hit complete game for the Stags. Both Bonny Eagle runs were unearned. Sanborn went the distance for the Scots. Only three of the seven Cheverus runs were earned. Bonny Eagle committed four errors while Cheverus committed three.

Cheverus jumped to a 5-0 lead in the first inning and added two runs in the seventh. Both Bonny Eagle runs came in the sixth.
