Blazes rolling, Scots reeling

2 min read

The Westbrook High and Bonny Eagle baseball teams have been moving in opposite directions recently.

Following a loss to undefeated Deering, Westbrook has rattled off four straight victories to move to 9-1, its most recent win coming over Thornton Academy on Tuesday, 12-2. The Blue Blazes are No. 1 in the latest release of the Western Maine Class A Heal Points, though they had played one more game than Deering when the standings were calculated. While Deering will overtake the Blazes if it runs the table, Westbrook is in good position to secure the second seed in the playoffs, as the toughest part of its schedule is behind it.

Bonny Eagle, meanwhile, has dropped four straight after starting the season with six wins. The Scots stand at 6-4 and were sixth in the Heal Points, which counted games through Saturday. On Tuesday, the Scots fell to Sanford on the road 4-3.

Westbrook and Bonny Eagle met Saturday in Standish, with the Blazes using a complete-game pitching effort from Christian Hamilton to pull out a 5-2 road win.

The Blazes scored once in the first, then twice in the third to take a 3-0 lead as Zach Gardiner’s single to left drove in Matt Foye. A throw to third base bounced off a sliding Hamilton and allowed him, too, to score.

Bonny Eagle got a run back in the bottom of the third as Ryan Nason led off with a double, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on Adam Morin’s groundout.

The teams each scored in the fourth, as Lance Ludka came home on an error for Westbrook and Richie Harvey’s double plated Tyler Ruby for the Scots. The Scots had two runners thrown out on the base paths in the inning.

Nick Finocchiaro’s single knocked in Gardiner in the fifth to give Westbrook the 5-2 lead.

Hamilton struck out seven, allowed seven hits and walked one. Lincoln Sanborn pitched a complete game for Bonny Eagle, striking out 11, allowing eight hits and three earned runs while walking one.

Finocchiaro, Gardiner and Scott Heath each had two hits for the Blazes. Tim Grovo had two hits for the Scots, including a third-inning triple.
